Abstract

In this paper, we trace out the political and institutional characteristics that provide the underpinnings of private sector development in particular, and to some extent economic development more generally. We start by introducing and reviewing the general political economy literature, with focus on the antecedents within economics that lead up to the vibrant political economy research of the last three decades. We then zoom in on two specific aspects of political economy of importance for private sector development: (political) institutions and state capacity. We end the chapter by covering some recent research that aims to directly explore the political economy aspects of private sector development.
