Abstract

This thesis investigated the effect of physical activity and sedentary behaviour on markers for cardiovascular and brain diseases. In general, we found an association between physical activity and different markers for cardiovascular diseases. This association entails that physical activity could have a potentially positive influence on risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. This thesis also showed that this association is stronger in individuals with type 2 diabetes. We also found an association between physical activity and certain areas of the brain (grey matter), which indicates a positive influence of physical activity and grey matter. The intervention trial that we performed showed the difficult and multi-factorial problem of a behaviour change in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
