Abstract

This chapter describes and discusses the main child and adolescent neuropsychiatric aspects of a specific and rapidly evolving type of brain inflammation: autoimmune encephalitis. First, the clinical presentations of the major subtypes are described. Next, an update on the field of N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalitis, the most important and best known variant of autoimmune encephalitis, is described focusing on (1) current developments in the diagnostic process, (2) the various kinds of treatments available, and (3) outcomes. Given that the involvement of different medical specialties is imperative in the diagnostic and treatment process, we also will describe and discuss specific pediatric intensive care multidisciplinary guidelines (the ABCDEF bundle), which also applies well to the assessment and treatment of autoimmune encephalitis.
