title = "Social security rights of third-country nationals coming from outside the EU: The scope and meaning of equal treatment",
abstract = "Social security rights of third-country nationals moving to the European Union are protected through an equal treatment provision found in different EU instruments. Depending on the migration status or on the origin of the third-country national, different EU instruments will be applicable. The EU approach towards migration is a fragmented one and so is the protection offered by the equal treatment provision when it comes to social security benefits. Overall, the purpose of this chapter is not only to investigate what is the scope and meaning of equal treatment with regard to social security enshrined in the different EU instruments on migration of third-country nationals from outside the European Union, but also to critically reflect upon their differences and convergences, to make recommendations for future policies, as well as to provide ideas for further research.",
