Abstract
Writing is a unique human achievement, and this chapter sketches some of the history of this achievement and how it is distinct from art. We visit the three known origins of writing in Mesopotamia, China, and Mesoamerica to show how writing arose, in what forms, and how it spread. We also provide an overview of how writing systems have been studied in modern times, and we propose some ideas about the future of writing, as well the future of research on writing and writing systems.
