Abstract

Innovation is a process of value creation, using knowledge and resources in a new way. Because the world is dynamic and complex, we have to learn to navigate and create an environment in which the innovation process can flourish. In this chapter you read about the hyperconnected world, in which most of the developments come from other environments and joint innovation becomes increasingly important. A new skillset is required to deal with the cultural, strategic, and operational challenges for open and combinatoric innovation. It is important to be open, to trust and be trusted, and to accept uncertainty. A particular aspect is that of accepting and learning from “brilliant failures.” Though it is helpful to make plans and communicate the essentials of the business development via tools like the Business Model Canvas, uncertainty in the dynamic and complex pharmaceutical world is a fact and to deal with it is a skill everyone should master.
