Abstract

Traditionally, nutrition research has focused on single food items or nutrients, although individuals do not consume nutrients or foods in isolation. Therefore, currently, the relation between dietary patterns and disease is the subject of much research. To date, several dietary patterns have been identified that have the potential to influence bladder cancer risk. Among them, the Mediterranean diet is the most beneficial in the fight against bladder cancer. Researchers showed that adherence to the Mediterranean diet could lower bladder cancer risk by up to almost 20%. The riskiest diet in terms of bladder cancer is the Western diet. People who follow the Western diet have a 70% higher risk for developing bladder cancer. The consumption of high amounts of sweet beverages has also been shown to have a negative effect on bladder cancer risk. In the fight against bladder cancer, we therefore recommend following the Mediterranean diet and avoiding the Western and sweet beverages diet.
