Abstract

The current section aims to revisit current clinical practice guidelines for follow-up, summarize the evidence for strategies, highlight benefits of a more personalized approach to follow-up care, and provide recommendations. In most countries, guidelines prescribe follow-up visits after primary treatment every 3–4 months in the first 2–3 years, every 6–12 months from years 3 to 5, and annually thereafter. The exact frequency, duration, and intensity differ per country and even hospital. High-level evidence for any particular follow-up strategy is lacking and here lies an opportunity for health professionals to take into account a patient’s risk of recurrence, quality of life needs, and preferences. Decision aids and patient-reported outcome measures can play a supporting role in providing more personalized follow-up care.
