Abstract
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Public Health Service (in German: ÖGD) experienced improvements in terms of personnel, communication, and scientific aspects. However, the equally pressing need to enhance established governance structures was largely overlooked. To bolster its preventive and intersectoral task portfolio, addressing long-standing resource deficits and legally establishing coordinating functions are essential measures.
