Abstract
This dissertation studied the relationship between incretins, a new group of blood glucose lowering drugs, and the risk of fractures in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Previous studies showed that people with type 2 diabetes mellitus have a higher risk of fractures than people without type 2 diabetes mellitus. It was also reported that the use of incretins might prevent fractures. Based on the results of this dissertation, we conclude that the use of incretins is not associated with an increased or decreased risk of fractures. These findings can be relevant when deciding which drugs to use in the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at high risk of fractures.
