Repliek: Discussiedossier over Verward van Geest

In onze repliek op de drie recensies van ons boek gaan we in op vijf kritiekpunten: het vermeende ontbreken van een centrale vraagstelling en een alomvattend verklaringsmodel; het bezwaar dat het boek geen synthese is; de wijze waarop wij de verhouding tussen vraag en aanbod in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg aan de orde stellen; de verhouding tussen de betekenisgeving door deskundigen in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg en onze interpretatie daarvan in termen van cultuurpessimisme en maakbaarheidsoptimisme en de onduidelijkheid die er zou bestaan met betrekking tot het door ons signaleerde proces van psychologisering. Wij stellen dat wij in de inleiding wel degelijk een hoofdvraag formuleren en daar uitgebreid en systematisch in de slotbeschouwing op terug komen. Wij lichten ook toe wat wij onder een synthese verstaan en benadrukken dat onze benadering overwegend empirisch-historisch en niet theoretisch-sociologisch is. Wij menen dat wij wel degelijk afstand houden van het toenmalige actorperspectief en dat de kritiek op onze beschrijving van psychologisering gebaseerd is op een te beperkte invulling van dat begrip.

In our retort to the reviews of our book we focus on five points of criticism: the presumed lack of a central question and an overall explanatory framework; the argument that the work is not a synthesis; the problem of the interplay between supply of and demand for mental health care; the relation between the perspective of mental health experts and our interpretation of it in terms of cultural pessimism as well as social design and the objection that our elaboration of the process of psychologisation remains unclear. We emphasise that we do indeed present a definition of a central problem in the introduction and that we discuss it extensively and systematically in our conclusion. We also explain what in our view a historical synthesis should aim at and that our approach is empirical-historical rather than theoretical-sociological. We believe that we keep aloof from the actor's perspective at that time and that the criticism of our description of psychologisation is based on a limited understanding of that term.
