Abstract

Heart failure is a global health problem. MicroRNAs are tiny molecules with the ability to influence the progression of different diseases. For this reason, we identified several specific microRNA's that play a role in the development of heart failure. We then manipulated the identified microRNAs in heart muscle cells and laboratory animals to slow the progression of heart failure. MiR-221/222 appears to play a fundamental role. Slowing this particular RNA results in stiffer heart muscles and reduced pump function in laboratory animals. In addition, heart patients with a low miR-221/222 expression have poorer heart function. Further research is necessary to determine whether increasing miR-221/222 in the heart protects against heart failure.
