Abstract
Based on patient experiences in the mental health sector, scientific research and collective experiential knowledge derived from clients, Boevink demonstrates that our understanding of 'psychiatric patients' is essential to improving quality of care. Exchanging experiential, scientific and professional knowledge is important for treating people with severe psychiatric disorders and for providing them with the proper support. This dissertation combines experiential analyses on the relationship between trauma and psychosis, outgrowing a psychiatric diagnosis and patient identity following a long-term hospital stay with a conceptual exploration and the development of a measurement tool for empowerment and impact studies on a recovery programme developed and carried out by clients for people with severe mental health problems.
