Abstract

This thesis examines methods to monitor coagulation balance in patients. There are already fast whole blood tests available, which can be performed at the patient’s bedside. These are time-saving tests, because there is no need to centrifuge the blood collection tubes obtained. However, there are some disadvantages to these tests compared to standard laboratory tests. It was shown that adjustments to these tests allowed a better analysis of fibrinolysis and platelet function. Faster coagulation monitoring during cardiac surgery proved to have cost-reducing effects as well. It was shown that these fast whole blood tests performed before, during and after cardiac surgery can reduce costs by up to thousands of euros.
