Engineering Niches for Bone Tissue Regeneration

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterAcademic

Abstract

This chapter places the topics from previous chapters into the context of bone tissue regeneration. The chapter introduces bone as a tissue and as a complex organ and discusses the clinical need for bone regeneration strategies. It shortly discusses historical and current regenerative and bone healing strategies and then emphasizes on potential uses of materials and engineering approaches that can be used to influence and control the bone niche. The focus is on the applications and evidence for the many existing strategies available to augment bone regeneration. Future developing and promising topics are also discussed and how these may ultimately benefit patients.
