Abstract

This dissertation explores several themes in the field of bone tissue engineering, a research area that examines how biomaterials and/or (stem) cells can be used to repair bone defects. The common theme is research on the bone-forming capacity of stem cells. Stem cells from both fat and bone marrow are compared, as is the influence of different biomaterials on the bone-forming capacity of stem cells. In addition, bone formation in scar tissue is analysed, as bone formation here is not desirable. The predictive value of signal proteins by computer models is also examined in patients with severe injuries.
