Description

The Global Health Section Book Prize recognizes the best book on any aspect of global health published in the previous two years. The recipient is selected by a committee appointed by the Global Health Section of International Studies Association (ISA). ISA was founded in 1959 and is one of the oldest interdisciplinary associations dedicated to understanding international, transnational and global affairs. It has more than 7,000 members worldwide, including academics, practitioners, policy experts, private section workers and independent researchers, among others.

Being the only winner for this section, this book entitled HIV/AIDS in China and India: Governing Health Security was published by Palgrave Macmillan US in 2015. It compares the policy approaches taken by China and India in dealing with HIV/AIDS. The author applied the securitization theory with some modifications to address the original shortcomings of the theory.

"The panel was impressed by the important contribution the book makes to securitization theory from a non-Western context, the exhaustive empirical scope and detail of the book, and the focus on the wider politics of HIV/AIDS in India and China. Through extensive interviews in both countries and through a process of discourse analysis, Lo interrogates the extent to which the disease has been successfully securitized at both the national and sub-national levels at the same time as offering a new framework of analysis for securitization theory. This is a well-written book that will have appeal to many, from area specialists and public health professionals through to scholars of securitization theory and HIV/AIDS."
