Commitment and Community in Liberal Education: Reflections on the roles of students and educators

One of the central goals of liberal education is to allow students to develop commitments to ideas, values and ways of life. This cultivation of commitment is crucial in the economic, the civic and the personal domain. However, it cannot be taught in the same way knowledge and skills are: teachers cannot gives lectures about what students' commitments should be and students cannot learn commitment from a book. Rather, it can only develop in the context of an academic community, in which students and educators collaboratively explore differences and find themselves in the other. Sustaining such a community requires educators and students to fulfil certain roles. In this lecture, we will explore what those roles are, what kinds of behaviour they require and how we can encourage members of an academic community to live up them.
