What do heads of academic departments need to know about digitalisation?

This chapter uses an FAQ format to address common questions about digital technologies in higher education. The imagined questions are posed by a head of department with low digital literacy who is dealing with a myriad of questions from colleagues. The FAQs aim to help all of them navigate technical and social aspects of digital tools. The FAQs are divided into five sections: research, education, infrastructure, personnel, and operations. Digital technologies offer numerous opportunities for innovative teaching, research, and societal engagement. They are essential for accessing online resources and improving administrative efficiency. However, there are challenges in using them well. The chapter makes four key assumptions: technologies are always developed and used in particular social and historical contexts; universities are full of old and new technologies, digital and otherwise; universities played a key role in the development of digital technologies; and universities should align their digital practices with public values such as openness and sustainability. The chapter highlights the importance of understanding the social dimensions of technology and the need for universities to integrate digital tools thoughtfully into their operations. It encourages academic leaders to leverage digital technologies to enhance their institutions' educational and administrative functions. A glossary of technical terms used in the FAQs and a list of references are included.
