Urban research in another dimension: methods for modelling historical cities

Abstract

Did you know that Google offers the option of time travel? Satellite images in Google Earth will transport you back in time some ten years, sometimes even in 3D. Take the city of Amsterdam, for example. When we zoom in on one of the main streets in the city centre, the Rokin, we see a busy street with metro stops and a flurry of parasols. Five years ago: a building site with cranes and holes in the ground. Another five years back, and we see lots of traffic and bustle. Those who are familiar with trends in urban development know these observations testify to significant changes in Amsterdam, such as the construction of the new north–south metro line, and the increasing importance of leisure and touristic venues in the city centre.
