Abstract
While female executives are often recognized for their relational and empathetic qualities, their potential role in mitigating employee mental distress during challenging periods remains poorly understood. In this paper we argue that individuals employed at firms led by female (versus male) executives experience a lesser increase in mental distress following surges in import competition. Our analysis of a comprehensive employer-employee dataset of Dutch manufacturing firms (2011-2019), where mental distress is measured through psychotropic medication usage, supports our hypotheses.
