title = "The EU Charter and anti-discrimination law",
abstract = "The European Union (EU) Charter of Fundamental Rights contains a chapter entitled {\textquoteleft}Equality{\textquoteright} and protects the right to equality and the right to non-discrimination. The actual role played by these Charter rights in the EU legal order is less prominent than one would expect, because they are overshadowed, in practice, by the more detailed embodiments of discrimination law in a number of EU legislative acts. The equality rights of the Charter can best be viewed as a complement to these more detailed legislative provisions. The chapter identifies the various ways in which the Charter displays this complementary role and also discusses the legal meaning given by the Court of Justice of the EU to the equality rights of the Charter.",
