Abstract

The research has focused on the physical and chemical characteristics of the Litani River. The Litani River is the largest river of Lebanon. Water samples were collected from six sites along the Litani River path. The end result of this study was to construct six water treatment plants. The Electric Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and pH of Litani River water were measured at these locations; In addition, data collected was tested for correlation effect with the chemical properties of Litani. Some ions from Litani River water were also analyzed: Nitrate Ion (NO3-), Nitrous Ion (NO2-), Phosphate Ion (PO43-), Ammonium Ion (NH4+) and Potassium Ion (K+). All physical and chemical analysis that was carried on revealed that the most polluted site is at Qasmieh and the major cause of pollution most probably resulted from agricultural activities carried on in that region.
