Abstract
Sleep problems are common in children and youth. They have a major impact on the cognitive, emotional and physiological development and functioning of the family system. Yet often there is insufficient attention to sleep problems and they are not recognized or diagnosed. The most common sleep problems in children and youth are insomnia and delayed sleep-wake phase disorder. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-i) is the treatment of choice for insomnia, while for delayed sleep-wake phase disorder a combination of behavioral advice and chronotherapy (treatment to shift the rhythm using melatonin and light therapy) applies. When working with children and adolescents, the implementation of CBT-i requires adjustments and creativity from the practitioner, so that it fits the child and his family system. Therefore, treatment of sleep problems in children and adolescents is almost always tailor-made.
