Abstract
In this entry, we reflect on the roots of polarization, its manifestations, and the far-reaching consequences it potentially has for the current deterioration of political representation. We focus on the interplay of recent changes in political representation against the backdrop of escalating affective and ideological polarization, interrogating the nexus between the two phenomena and its implications for the future relationship between citizens and their elected representatives.
