Abstract

Vitamin B3 (niacin) deficiency can result in pellagra. In addition to gastrointestinal symptoms, also skin changes occur at an early stage, namely a burning, painful, exfoliative, photosensitive dermatitis. Diagnosis is made based on typical clinical presentation, determination of vitamin B3 blood levels, histopathology, and -on indication-evaluation of underlying malabsorption or suspected medication. Early treatment by oral vitamin B3 suppletion is important to prevent neurological symptoms and even sudden death.
