Nutritional assessment in COPD hurdles and horizons

Abstract

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) is primarily characterized by problems related to the lungs and breathing, but it also causes changes in processes elsewhere in the body. It is common for patients with COPD to also have poor nutritional status. Poor nutritional status is associated with more severe COPD symptoms and an increased risk of mortality. Therefore, assessing the nutritional status of a COPD patient is very important. The studies in this dissertation sought to identify opportunities for a comprehensive assessment of the nutritional status of COPD patients. These studies indicate that more attention should be given to COPD-specific factors that influence nutritional intake, such as impairments in taste and smell, reduced autonomy, and the specific consequences of respiratory problems during meal times. Additionally, optimizing nutritional care during a hospital stay, for example during an acute exacerbation, should not be overlooked.
