Nudging food choices in Dutch food banks: A qualitative study with clients and volunteers

Research output: Contribution to journal › Article › Academic › peer-review

Abstract

We examined the acceptance of healthy food nudges at Dutch food banks by interviewing clients (N = 13) and volunteers (N = 18). Interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. Clients voiced the determinants of their food choices and the lack of need for health interventions. Volunteers mentioned the conflicting values involved and food literacy as important factors. Importantly, both clients and volunteers indicated that there is limited room for nudging healthy food choices as the food bank relies on food donations and consequently has little control over the food on offer. Dutch food banks may not be the ideal place to nudge food choices.
