Migration, the MDGs, and SDGs: Context and Complexity

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterAcademic

Abstract

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have - for better or worse - provided guiding principles for human development in the twenty-first century. The inclusion of migration in the SDGs has been celebrated by many international actors, but what does this actually imply? How is migration included, and what does this tell us about the relationship between migration and development? Situating the inclusion of migration in the SDGs into the broader context of the formulation and acceptance of global goals on development and migration’s journey as a global policy issue, this chapter offers a brief commentary of the narratives strategies underpinning migration’s inclusion in the SDGs.
