Abstract

The report contains a documented description of legislation with explanations that are important for situations of abandonment and forced marriage in Morocco. There are still women and children in the Netherlands who are taken abroad by their husbands or parents. Their passport and residence papers are taken away, so that they cannot return to the Netherlands independently. Relationship problems, westernization or re-education in the eyes of the husband or parents are usually the underlying reasons. It also happens that young people in the country of origin are forced to enter into a marriage. These practices are punishable. When preparing to bring these women, children and young people back to the Netherlands, organizations in the Netherlands are encountering local laws and regulations. The report offers professionals tools for the approach and working method in concrete situations of abandonment and forced marriage.
