Abstract

Intraoperative risks/complications include arterial and venous vessel injuries, direct and indirect nerve and soft tissue injuries and incomplete or irregular osteotomies (bad splits) (Kim J Korean Assoc Oral Maxillofac Surg 431:3–15, 2017; van Merkesteyn et al. Int J Oral and Maxillofacial Surg 166:665– 670, 1987; Houppermans et al. J Craniomaxillofac Surg 449:1170–1180, 2016). For the sake of completeness, possible damage to neighboring teeth must also be mentioned. Intraoperative hazards and risks: • Vascular injury. • Nerve injury. • Undesirable fracture lines—bad split. • Incorrect positioning of the proximal segments/condyle.
