Abstract
The interdisciplinarity of heroism refers to the process by which heroism is explored from a diverse set of scholarly perspectives using various methods of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities.
This entry gives an overview of how heroism is studied from different academic angles and using various scientific methods. The academic disciplines studying heroism are highly diverse, including (evolutionary) biology, literature studies, and nursing science. The methods used include qualitative work, surveys, experiments, brain imaging, and extensive analyses of archive data. At its core, this highly heterogeneous stream of scientific literature is connected by a fascination with one of the most remarkable features of human behavior: our ability to self-sacrifice for others.
