Abstract
Hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure > 140 mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg. Renin is a key enzyme of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), cleaving angiotensinogen to angiotensin I and, thereby, having an impact on the synthesis rate of the effector hormone of the RAAS, angiotensin II. The RAAS is a hormone system that plays a central role in the control of sodium secretion, fluid volume, and vascular tone, thus controlling blood pressure.
