Abstract

Many interconnected processes challenge the coagulation system during cardiac surgery. Early diagnosis of the pathophysiology allows clinicians to institute appropriate targeted therapy rapidly. Point-of-care whole blood viscoelastic monitors and platelet function analyzers are designed for that purpose. The incorporation of these point-of-care tests into coagulation-management algorithms improves the management of coagulopathy and their use is recommended by North American and European guidelines.
