Health outcomes measurement for value-based healthcare: evidence from Saudi Arabia

This thesis thoroughly explores health outcome measurement in hospitals in Saudi Arabia, focusing on advancing the transition to Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC). Through rigorous research, it addresses critical questions hospitals may encounter regarding outcome measurement along their VBHC journey. While acknowledging the complexity of VBHC, this thesis concentrates on exploring outcome measurement practices to guide hospitals' transformation. It underscores the necessity of standardizing outcome measurement to enable consistent assessment across medical conditions and providers. By examining Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) alongside clinical outcomes and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), it highlights their role in holistic healthcare evaluation. Moreover, it emphasizes the need for practical implementation models for VBHC, advocating for systematic approaches prioritizing standardized outcome measurement. Additionally, it identifies barriers to VBHC implementation and offers theory-informed strategies to overcome them, facilitating the transition toward patient-centric and value- based healthcare services.
