Abstract

Historically, microsurgery is a term used to encompass the surgical procedures that include the use of the three “Ms” (Microscope, Microinstruments, and Microsutures), during its execution. Since the advent of microsurgery in the 1960s, and with the continuous development of new techniques and principles, there is no question that the advent of microsurgery opened the potential of reconstructive surgery to possibilities never contemplated in the past, with limitless reconstructive possibilities. This chapter highlights the most important innovations and milestones in the history of microsurgery, as well as the surgical basis of microsurgery.
