Abstract

This contribution analyses the judgment of the Court of Justice in Case C680/21, Royal Antwerp. It focuses on the interaction between sports governance and EU law, considering especially free movement rules. Two interconnected aspects are discussed. First, the Court’s clarification on the scope and meaning of Article 165 TFEU, and second, the application of the principle of proportionality in sports cases and beyond. It is argued that the ruling calls for an improvement of sports governance based on the enhancement of its democratic legitimation.
