Abstract

The county of Gronsveld, which includes the villages of Gronsveld, Eckelrade, Heugem, Honthem and Slenaken, was an independent city-state that, until 1795, belonged to one of the small territories that currently make up the Province of Limburg. The lords of Gronsveld, considered imperial counts since 1586, derived their sovereign authority 'from the sun' (hence the Dutch term zonneleen) and recognised the German emperor as the supreme authority.
After an introduction to the country and the German history of the Van Bronckhorst Batenburg and Toerring-Jettenbach houses, legislation, administration, taxation and law were set down in relation to the German Empire.
This research model can be used to study similar territories in the Meuse region.
