Abstract

We present an overview of major dissociative disorders, including depersonalization/derealization disorder, dissociative amnesia, and dissociative identity disorder. We discuss the prevalence, etiology, and treatment of each disorder and review treatment approaches. We present two competing models of dissociation, the posttraumatic model and the sociocognitive model, highlight controversies that have divided the field for more than a century, present a more encompassing transdiagnostic and transtheoretical framework for understanding dissociative disorders, and provide suggestions for future research.
