Abstract

This doctoral research focuses on the application of various technological tools in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. EMDR is one of the most effective evidence-based treatment methods for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). During EMDR, a traumatic memory is activated in the working memory, which is then overloaded through distraction tasks. The research describes several experiments involving healthy participants, in which technological tools such as virtual reality, computer programs, and smartphone applications are used to enhance working memory taxation and the activation of traumatic memories. In addition, the research explores how online EMDR tools can be used for remote treatment, as well as self-help applications that enable individuals to activate and process traumatic memories without the involvement of a therapist. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying EMDR and demonstrates how technological innovations can support the further development and improvement of the therapy. Such innovations have the potential to make EMDR more accessible and may help reduce barriers to PTSD treatment.
