Abstract

Analysis of nuclear reactions induced with a 2.8 MeV He-3 beam is used for the simultaneous determination of the amounts of C-12 and C-13 atoms in samples. Calibration samples made out of mixtures with a known C-13/C-12 isotope ratio are used to investigate the accuracy of the technique. Different energy dependences of the cross sections of the reactions used to detect C-13 and C-12 are found to result in a strong dependence on the target thickness in the experimental determination of C-13/C-12 isotope ratios. This poses additional requirements to the sample preparation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
