Conclusion to the Research Handbook on EU Disability Law

At present, EU disability law represents, in equal measures, a dynamic field of EU action and a burgeoning area of research. The conclusion by the EU of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) resulted in a surge in EU action in the field of disability law, and spurred the adoption of new legislation specifically aimed at the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, as well as the further mainstreaming of disability across the EU action. This concluding chapter ties together the various reflections and strands of analysis put forward by the contributors to this volume, including future perspectives in the field of EU disability law. The chapter highlights two key themes that emerge from this edited volume as a whole. In the first instance, the chapter outlines that the boundary line between the understanding of certain duties and the use of certain concepts in international human rights law differs from those that exist in EU law. In the second instance, it is demonstrated in this concluding chapter that several vertical and horizontal complexities characterise the implementation of the CRPD in the EU legal order.
