Abstract
Organizational reliance on cloud-based services is growing at an exponential rate, fueled by their promised efficiency and capacity gains. However, shifting to cloud computing solutions comes with its share of risks and challenges, particularly related to data security and data protection compliance. Cloud service providers have responded by seeking to provide greater assurances of the security and lawfulness of their services. This has created various cloud security-related trends, as technology develops and providers idealize new ways to improve their offerings. This chapter will focus on two of these trends as illustrations: an increased reliance on data encryption, and the appearance of several self-regulatory frameworks (including codes of conduct and certification mechanisms). A more detailed look will be had at the EUCS—Cloud Services Scheme, which serves as a testament to the European Union's comprehensive and proactive approach to cybersecurity, and which aims to set a global cloud security benchmark.
