Abstract
Polyacrylonitrile-based (PAN) carbon fibers (CF) provide outstanding mechanical properties combined with a low-weight which makes CF highly interesting for the automotive industry. The high market price of CF of around 20 £/kg is a limiting factor that prohibits the use of CF in the mass market. Alternatives to produce more affordable CF (5-12 £/kg) have been investigated by the ITA [1, 2].
