Abstract

N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) is a polar aprotic solvent that is critical for the production of polyaramids. However, due to its reprotoxicity and pending REACH restrictions, a benign alternative is needed. A mixture of N-butyl pyrrolidone (NBP) and the ionic liquid [C(8)MIm][Cl] is proposed as a promising candidate to replace NMP. This organic electrolyte solution provides a green approach to polyaramid synthesis.
