Abstract
This thesis explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can improve heart imaging and help predict and manage cardiovascular risk. It focuses on using advanced computer tools to address the limitations of current methods in assessing heart health, particularly for conditions like coronary artery disease, which is a major global health issue. The research highlights the potential of AI to analyze imaging data, such as calcium buildup in heart arteries, to predict heart disease and adverse events. It also explores the use of AI to study fat surrounding the heart, which is believed to promote inflammation and increase cardiovascular risk. These tools were tested in different cohorts, including individuals with HIV, patients with chest pain, and those undergoing lung cancer screening. By combining medical imaging with AI technology, this work proposes new ways to improve heart care and demonstrates how AI can play a crucial role in advancing the future of healthcare.
