It gives an overview of the current understanding of the microbiology involved in the two very different diseases and their exacerbations, and introduces the most relevant clinical trials performed so far. The appraisal of the microbiology and the studies will hopefully help clinicians to make educated treatment choices based on the current literature. Moreover, ongoing trials are presented in order to highlight the directions in which the field is evolving.",
