Abstract

Dementia is incurable. That is one of the reasons why there is increasing attention for the quality of life of people with dementia. This dissertation shows that the quality of dementia care in the Netherlands is good compared to other countries. The quality of life of people with dementia moving out of their home into a nursing home does not necessarily deteriorate. In fact, on average it remains the same. That is partly due to opportunities to participate in activities and social interactions provided by nursing homes. It is shown that the most important determinant of a good quality of life is being in a good mood.
