Abstract

Patients with type 2 diabetes are insensitive to insulin, the essential hormone for the absorption of sugars. Both in diabetics and in healthy endurance athletes an above average quantity of fat is stored in muscle cells, which is only problematic in diabetes patients. This contradiction has been investigated in this dissertation. Diabetes patients appear to store fat in muscle cells in a different way than the way endurance athletes do this. However, if diabetes patients exercise more, the storage pattern of fat in the muscle cell improves. This change is accompanied by an increased sensitivity to insulin, which may improve the quality of life of a diabetes patient.
