Abstract

The conclusion summarises the main findings of the book and is organised around the volume’s three key themes: the EU’s self-understanding and projected role and identity in the 21st century; the institutional dynamics and the instruments and approaches the EU has at its disposal to fulfil its role and ambitions; and Europe’s partnership with the US. It identifies the issue of EU strategic autonomy as the most important and challenging question the Union needs to tackle in the coming decades and discusses its different dimensions, including the scope of EU external action, its governance structures, the EU’s foreign policy identity, and the EU’s relations with other major players, especially the US and China.
